As is the case with many transformative experiences, it is hard to put into words what an amazing journey the Kantra-Gates Vinyasa Yoga Teacher Trainings, both 200hr and 300hr, have been and continue to be for me. David and Augusta are teachers in every sense of the word, embodying what they teach by “walking the walk,” not simply “talking the talk.” They helped build a safe and supportive space for all to learn, explore, open, grow, and support one another to be successful.
I practiced yoga for a few years when I signed up for David and Augusta’s teacher training program. I loved Augusta’s classes and was always intrigued with the wisdom of yoga she wove into them. I didn’t necessarily want to teach, but wanted to learn more about how yoga worked, both on and off the mat.
Our class was a mixed group. Some practiced yoga for years, while others were new to it. Everyone excelled. The work was not always easy. We were encouraged to step out of our comfort zones, but under their leadership, I wanted to do just that! They love what they do and love to share what they’ve learned. They created a safe and supportive space where we were willing to make mistakes and grow from them.
I loved my training weekends. David and Augusta brought so much more to the training than teaching us how to teach a yoga class. They made it challenging but fun! Our class bonded quickly. I’ve just completed my 500 hours of training with the Kantras. I’m still not sure I want to be a yoga teacher, but if they offered more training hours, I would be the first to sign up!
When I was originally asked about participating in the 2014 Kantra-Gates Yoga Teacher Training my reaction was “that’s crazy – I don’t want to teach yoga”. I also thought there was no way I had the time or resources to commit to an 8 month program. But then I kept hearing comments like “it is transformational”, “it is life-training”, “you don’t have to want to teach yoga classes to be in the training.”
Several people lovingly nudged me to sign up and it is one of the best decisions I ever made for myself. Augusta and David Kantra are an exceptional team and they truly teach “yoga from the heart”. I learned that being a yoga teacher is not limited to teaching poses. It is about learning a different way to interact with myself and the world around me. Learning skillful ways to approach my life has had an inherently positive impact on those around me so I am essentially “teaching” after all! Augusta and David are skillful and loving professionals who teach both the science and philosophy of yoga in an incredibly fun environment that fosters lasting friendships. The 200 hr training with them started me on a personal journey that I will be forever grateful for.
If you are looking for a training full of heart, this is it. If you are interested in falling deeper in love with yoga, while bonding with like-minded souls, I wholly recommend training with Augusta and David. Their alchemy creates an open-hearted environment where growth and learning thrive! The community of support in this training, our “sangha”, more than fostered me in becoming a teacher. It was the beginning of many rich and lasting friendships. These gifts are invaluable, and I am forever grateful. The love born in that community carries me through every class I teach. Training with Augusta and David in effect parallels the practice of yoga: it feeds the flame of our divine spark.
Yoga and subsequently teacher training came at a time in my life where change was imperative. I had been through several rough years and finally came to the conclusion that my same old way of doing things and dealing with things had to change. I started yoga teacher training basically brand new to yoga and totally unsure of what to expect. All I knew was that Augusta was teaching it and that yoga was the only thing that ever stopped my mind…that was enough for me. What surprised me was that I didn’t just learn about yoga, I learned a lot about myself and those I love and how to be the best me I could possibly be.
To those of you who may be trying to decide on whether or not you want to commit to the upcoming 200 Hr. Yoga Teacher Training with David and Augusta Kantra, this is what I have to say to you:
Purely and simply, it changed me and the way I look at just about everything. My reason for such a serious commitment was never about teaching yoga, although I do sub for Augusta occasionally and am very honored to do so. But chiefly, I knew that the yoga philosophy was something my teachers were very committed to themselves, and I felt it was a way of living and knowing that would help me make better, more skilled decisions in my own life. They were the example that proved to me how valuable my investment in time and money would be. And they did not disappoint! Their way of teaching challenged me and my habits and asked me to grow in ways I knew would improve my enjoyment and love for life. Their way of teaching made me laugh. It made me cry, and, made me get more honest with myself and about myself than I ever had before. It meant so much to me that soon after, I signed up for the 300 Hr. training too!
Before embarking on my 200-hr Yoga Teacher Training in 2014, I had been going through a difficult time in my life. I had been looking for stability in my personal life and just felt really stressed and confused about where my life was going. Since I had been practicing Yoga off and on for 10 years, I knew that the work had to start with me. I had to work from within to find the peace and strength I was longing for. Augusta offered the training to me and I feel like it really happened at the right time. I had no desire to teach Yoga, but I hoped for an inner transformation and just an opportunity to deepen my practice. I can truly say that I got so much more than I ever hoped for. For the first time in my life I found myself truly committed to something and this training gave me the tools to find discipline, courage, self-compassion, strength, patience, contentment, gratitude, peacefulness, open-heartedness and so much more.
